“Life in Puna changed forever on May 3, 2018 when the first fissure erupted on Mohala Street in Leilani Estates. The following day, a M6.9 Earthquake, the largest in Hawaii since 1975, marked a turning point in history and a hulihia for lower Puna: an upheaval of events that left the land unrecognizable from one day to the next. The hardship sometimes brought by the spectacular power of the volcano is nothing new to the people of Puna however. The harsh realities of living near the active East Rift Zone of Kilauea have impacted communities in this region for generations. Sharing the stories, the knowledge, and the experience of the volcano is a part of our mission.” --Pahoa Lava Zone Museum.

Presentation by John Stallman to follow: “Lessons from a Lava Fountain”.
7:30pm May 3, and May 4, 2021.
The 1959-1960 Lava fountains and crater-collapse were once considered a model of “normal” behavior for Kilauea and its routinely active East Rift Zone, but reality keeps turning out to be a little more complicated than some models might suggest. Naturalist Interpreter and Volcano Educator John Stallman reviews the events of the 1960 LERZ eruption and its devastating impacts on the communities of Kapoho and Koae, as told through newspaper clippings from that time. People made many valiant attempts to divert the lava flow in 1960, but how successful were they really? The lessons learned from the past can help us understand what to expect from Kilauea in the future, and how best to react.
Admission: Open House w/Pupus: $30. Presentation: $30, minimum donations. ($60 Full Package).
